Nonviolent Communication
Listening Beyond the Words
Sunday 18th October 2026 | 1:00-3:00pm | Online
Communication is at the heart of every helping relationship. Yet even with the best intentions, it can be difficult to hear what someone is really trying to express, particularly when emotions are heightened, relationships are strained or conflict is present.
Developed by Marshall Rosenberg, Nonviolent Communication offers a compassionate and practical framework for understanding ourselves and others more deeply. Rather than focusing on blame, judgement or solutions, NVC invites us to become curious about the universal human needs that lie beneath our thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
What We Will Explore
In this interactive Practice Matters session, we will explore the core principles of Nonviolent Communication and consider how this model can enrich therapeutic and helping practice.
- The philosophy and guiding principles of Nonviolent Communication.
- The four stages of the NVC communication model: Observation, Feelings, Needs and Requests.
- How each stage can be explored sensitively within therapeutic and helping relationships.
- Distinguishing observations from interpretations and judgements.
- The relationship between feelings and unmet or fulfilled needs.
- How identifying underlying needs can deepen empathy and strengthen connection.
- How clear, compassionate requests can support change and collaboration.
Participants will be invited to explore aspects of the model through personal and professional examples, helping to bridge theory and practice in a safe and supportive learning environment.
Investment: £25 per person. A CPD Certificate of Attendance will be provided.
